Eating Healthy Luxury Vacation Cruise Style
The cuisine on cruises is scrumptious and plentiful. Sometimes it’s too scrumptious and plentiful. Occasionally travelers avoid taking a luxury vacation aboard a cruise ship simply to avoid the pitfall of gaining weight by giving in to the temptation of the plentiful buffets, gourmet sit-down dinners, snacks, room service, and tropical drinks. So how DOES one enjoy a fabulous luxury vacation aboard the ships of Oceania Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Windstar Cruises, Silversea Cruises and more without gaining weight? There are ways.
Make a Plan
If you have already spent a luxury vacation aboard a cruise ship and know the ropes, you know what you need to avoid. If this is your first luxury vacation cruise, spend some time looking at the literature provided by the cruise line or the cruise’s website. When you know what will tempt you, you will know what you need to do. If decadent desserts are your downfall, write down your limit. Perhaps you will only eat dessert once a day. Perhaps you will avoid red meat or more than one alcoholic beverage a day. Then take a personal, and written, vow to exercise aboard ship.
Be Prepared
Pack what you need to insure that you will follow up on your workouts or yoga classes. If your workout clothes are right there where you need them, you’re less likely to use the excuse of not having your sneakers to skip an exercise class on your luxury vacation.
Post the Plan
On board your luxury vacation cruise ship, post your plan where you can see it. Check it often. At the end of each day, make a note as to how you have done in following your plan.
Luxury Vacation Shore Excursions
Plan to indulge in excursions that involve activity. Hike the beach before, after, or rather than, lying in the sun. A bicycle tour is a wonderful luxury vacation activity and much healthier than a guided bus tour.
Change it Up
Don’t let yourself get in a rut. Most luxury vacation cruise lines offer lots of exercise activities, from fitness centers to exercise classes, including yoga, spinning, and more. Sign up for some of those classes and spend some time in the gym. Enjoy a walk on deck with a friend after dinner and to exercise off some of that mouthwatering dessert.
Be Smart About What You Eat
All luxury vacation cruise lines offer a wide variety of choices. There’s no reason to eat badly at breakfast, knowing that your luxury vacation has so many delicious meals coming up that same day. Choose a light cereal or yogurt and pass up the pastries so you don’t have to skip all the wonderful dishes at lunch and dinner. If you indulge in the breakfast pastry, have a salad for lunch. Meal menus will undoubtedly have lower calorie choices as well as those butter-drenched, sauce-laden dishes that are so high in calories. If you just can’t live without the salmon, and the salmon is cooked in butter and swathed with a tarragon cream sauce, ask your server if you can have the salmon plain with a slice of lemon. There’s no reason not to ask for your salad dressing on the side. You do when dining out at home, right?
